The Pride Agenda Endorses ALAN HEVESI

Alan Hevesi served as New York City Comptroller since 1993, winning re-election in 1997. He previously served 22 years in the New York State Assembly, representing parts of Queens. As an Assemblyman, he was an early sponsor of both SONDA and hate crimes legislation. As Comptroller, Mr. Hevesi says he used his trusteeship over city pension funds to file shareholder resolutions calling upon Cracker Barrel to end its antigay policies and ExxonMobil to create domestic partner benefits after the merger of Exxon and Mobil corporations. Mr. Hevesi says he was the first New York City-wide official to champion gay marriage rights and was a sponsor of the 1998 domestic partnership bill in New York City.

Mr. Hevesi has been endorsed by the Eleanor Roosevelt Democratic Club (Capital District), Gay and Lesbian Independent Democrats (NYC), Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn, Stonewall Democrats (NYC), Stonewall Democrats of Western New York and the Out People of Color Political Action Club (NYC) and the Guillermo Vazquez Independent Democratic Club. Elected officials endorsing Mr. Hevesi include State Senator Tom Duane, Assembly member Deborah Glick, Rochester City Councilman Tim Mains, and NYC Council member Christine Quinn.

William Mulrow was born in the Bronx and is currently a Westchester resident. This is his first attempt at public office, although he served as deputy campaign manager for openly gay Congressman Barney Frank. He also was an assistant to former New York City Council President Carol Bellamy and served as executive assistant to the New York State Budget Director. Mr. Mulrow is a Senior Vice President with Gabelli Asset Management Company, an investment management firm. From 1998 until January 2002, he served as the chairman of the Westchester County Industrial Development Agency, where he says he helped convince companies to remain in Westchester. Like Mr. Hevesi, Mr. Mulrow also says he supports same-sex marriages.

Mr. Mulrow is endorsed by Chautauqua County Democratic Part chair Greg Rabb, NYC Council members Margarita Lopez and Philip Reed, and Congressman Barney Frank.

Both candidates agree to take measures that would ensure the state's retirement system is administered to lesbian and gay employees and their families on the same basis as legally married employees. Each also supports using the state's position as a corporate shareholder to propose and/or support shareholder resolutions requiring management to ban sexual orientation discrimination in hiring, promotion, benefits and other job-related matters. Mr. Hevesi and Mr. Mulrow would both appoint qualified openly gay men and lesbians to the investments and retirement boards.

Both candidates support SONDA, the Dignity For All Students Act and legalization of same-sex marriages.
