Alan Gerson was first elected to represent lower Manhattan in 2001. A strong community advocate, he is the lead sponsor of the NYC Dignity in All Schools Act (DASA) and is actively working with other members of the Council and the DASA Coalition to pass a strong, effective bill that will protect our city's students and school employees. He has also supported funding for local LGBT organizations.

Margarita Lopez - D (Incumbent)
Since her election in 1997, Margarita Lopez, an out lesbian, has been one of the most outspoken voices on the Council in support of the LGBT community, becoming a primary sponsor of every bill that furthers equality for our community. Building on earlier community work, she has advocated for the development of special housing for people living with AIDS as well as funding for LGBT organizations. She is also a founding member of a neighborhood family planning clinic in Lower Manhattan.

Christine Quinn - D,WF (Incumbent)
Prior to taking office, Christine Quinn was Executive Director of the NYC Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project (AVP). Under Quinn's leadership, AVP not only expanded its range of programs and services, but also increased awareness of bias crimes nationwide. As an openly lesbian councilmember, she is a lead sponsor of the Equal Benefits Bill (EBB) and Dignity in All Schools Act (DASA), putting considerable resources behind the passage of both bills. She has advocated for funding for LGBT community-based organizations.

Eva Moskowitz - D,I (Incumbent)
Eva Moskowitz has been an advocate of the LGBT community since her election in 1999. As chair of the Education Committee in the Council, she is working with the lead sponsors of DASA and the community to pass a strong, effective piece of legislation. And in the past, she has actively lobbied Council leadership for funding for several LGBT social service organizations.

Gifford Miller - D,WF (Incumbent)
Gifford Miller won unanimous election to the post of New York City Council Speaker on January 9, 2002. Under his tenure, the Council has passed legislation protecting the rights of domestic partners, the transgender rights bill and a bill recognizing same-sex marriages from other localities. He has supported the allocation of funding to LGBT organizations and has expressed support for the Equal Benefits Bill.

Gale Brewer - D,WF (Incumbent)
Gale Brewer has been an active supporter of all LGBT legislation since her election in 2001. She attends rallies, marches and Pride parades celebrating the LGBT community. She has participated in a number of press conferences for bills such as DASA in order to further equality for the LGBT community. She has also supported funding for LGBT community organizations.

Robert Jackson - D,WF (Incumbent)
Robert Jackson is chair of the Contracts Committee, the committee through which the Equal Benefits Bill must pass before going to the floor for a full Council vote. He is a sponsor of the bill and has scheduled a first hearing for November 13. Jackson has sponsored and supported the LGBT legislation that has moved through the Council during his time in office, and supported funding for LGBT organizations.

Phil Reed - D,WF (Incumbent)
Since his election to the Council in 1997, Phil Reed has been a tireless advocate for the LGBT community. An openly gay man, he has stood up on all issues affecting our community, from anti-discrimination to the need for funding. As a primary sponsor of the transgender anti-discrimination bill in 2002, he worked with the other bill sponsors to see it passed. He has helped secure funding for Senior Action in a Gay Environment (SAGE).

Bill Perkins - D,WF (Incumbent)
Bill Perkins has worked hard with and for the LGBT community since his election in 1997. In 2002, he distinguished himself through his impassioned leadership of the coalition working to pass Intro. 24, the bill to amend the Human Rights Law to include explicit protections for transgender persons. Along with Councilmember Lopez, he was instrumental in recruiting more than two dozen additional co-sponsors for the legislation and pressing Council leadership to hold public hearings on it. He has also supported funding for local LGBT organizations.

Miguel Martinez was first elected to the New York City Council in 2001. After spending decades as a community activist, Maria Baez was first elected to the City Council in 2001. Along with sponsoring and supporting LGBT legislation in the Council during his first term, Tony Avella has been a community activist for over two decades. He has worked to clean up his district by helping paint over graffiti-covered locations. And for the past four years, Tony has been fighting the spread of hate stickers attributed to a neo-Nazi group throughout Northeast Queens.

Hiram Monserrate has been an ardent defender of civil rights for many years. Prior to his election in 2001, he was the first police officer elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the New York Civil Liberties Union. Finishing up his first term in office, Eric Gioia has championed the fights for reproductive rights, improvement of education in the city and LGBT rights. After running an investigation that discovered a lack of availability of emergency contraception in New York City, Gioia worked with his colleagues to write laws ensuring the wider availability of emergency contraception to all women in New York.

As a first-term councilmember, James Sanders, Jr. supported the LGBT community by sponsoring and voting for measures that further our equality in New York City. He also sponsored legislation to end housing discrimination against victims of domestic violence.

David Yassky - D,WF (Incumbent)
During his first term in office, David Yassky has proved his commitment to fostering respect and equality for the LGBT community of New York. He has attended rallies and press conferences in support of the EBB and DASA. In addition, he introduced a resolution in support of the state Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act (SONDA) in the City Council. Yassky has also advocated for funding on behalf of specific groups within the LGBT community, such as seniors.

As a first-term councilmember, Diana Reyna has opened her office to a number of LGBT groups, women's groups and other community-based organizations. Reyna has organized forums that allow community members to talk about their concerns.

Letitia James - WF (Open Seat)
Letitia James is an attorney from Brooklyn. She believes that much more can be done to reach out to LGBT people of color. If elected, she plans to build bridges between the Council's LGBT liaison, advocacy organizations and the African-American and Latino communities in her district. She will also sponsor the Equal Benefits Bill and Dignity in All Schools Act.

Bill de Blasio - D,WF (Incumbent)
A common thread that has run throughout Bill de Blasio's career, both in the Council and prior, is his desire to better the quality of life for all New Yorkers by improving public education, creating affordable housing and fighting discrimination based on race, religion, physical disability or sexual orientation. He was instrumental in moving both the transgender anti-discrimination bill and marriage recognition bill through the General Welfare Committee, which he chairs. He has also supported funding for local LGBT organizations.
