Long Island:

Suffolk County Legislature, 18th District - Jon Cooper (D, WFP, I - Incumbent)

Mr. Cooper, the only openly gay elected official on Long Island, has been a Suffolk County legislator since 1999. He played a key role in the passage of a law in 2001 that strengthened Suffolk's anti-discrimination protections for gay men and lesbians and added the same protections for the first time for transgender people. He is a sponsor of a bill extending health benefits to domestic partners of county employees (now being offered through an executive order by Suffolk's County Executive) and a bill to create a county-wide domestic partner registry. He answered every question on our questionnaire correctly, adding, "As the ONLY openly gay elected official on Long Island, I believe that I play an important role in the ongoing fight for equal rights for the LGBT community, right here at home."

Mr. Cooper is a champion of LGBT issues and has a proven record supporting our community as an elected official. The Empire State Pride Agenda is proud to endorse Jon Cooper's re-election to the 18th District of the Suffolk County Legislature.

Mr. Cooper is facing Republican Gregory X. Wagner and Conservative Dale McCoy, neither of whom returned a questionnaire to the Pride Agenda seeking our endorsement.
