Lead Organizer – NYC and Suburbs

Location:  New York City

Summary: The Empire State Pride Agenda is New York’s statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights and advocacy organization. Our mission is to win equality and justice for LGBT New Yorkers and our families.  Through our education, organizing and advocacy programs, we work toward creating a broadly diverse alliance of LGBT people and our allies in government, communities of faith, labor, all sectors of the workforce and other social justice movements to achieve equality for LGBT New Yorkers and the broader goals of social, racial and economic justice. 

The Lead Organizer for New York City and Suburbs is responsible for leading our field campaign for LGBT equality and justice in New York City, focusing on the outer boros and communities of color.  The Lead Organizer also oversees one or more Field Organizers in the suburbs (Long Island and Hudson Valley).  The Lead Organizer reports to the Field Director.

The Lead Organizer will:

  • Recruit and train volunteers as Marriage Ambassadors, Community Ambassadors, and Gender Non-Expression Discrimination Act (GENDA) Advocates
  • Lead monthly Community Action Teams that do community education, issue advocacy, grassroots lobbying and electoral work
  • Work with GENDA Field Organizer to promote the educational and advocacy efforts of the GENDA campaign
  • Provide direction and leadership to one or more Field Organizers doing similar work and under the leadership of the Field Director
  • Work in coordination with allies from the Pride Agenda’s Pride in Action projects and people of color community organizations in NYC.  Strengthen straight ally and people of color involvement in Pride Agenda campaigns
  • Work with Pride Agenda staff to organize LGBT support for selected social justice campaigns that build the strategic alliance between the Pride Agenda and LGBT and straight communities of color
  • Represent the Pride Agenda in trainings, community meetings, forums and conferences
  • Coordinate Pride Agenda activities at Pride Parades/Festivals in NYC and suburbs, and support upstate Pride coordination by the Field Director

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to the mission of the Pride Agenda and to serving LGBT communities through community-based and anti-racist organizing
  • Ability to provide leadership and motivate Field Organizer(s); experience directing staff
  • Electoral campaign experience is preferred but not required
  • Ability to think strategically and work independently
  • Ability to work as part of a team in a large campaign
  • Excellent listening , communication, and writing skills
  • High degree of computer literacy (Microsoft office, databases, internet-based organizing)
  • Ability to work flexible hours that includes nights and weekends
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred, but not required

Educational Requirements:

  • BA degree and two  years of campaign, community organizing or union organizing experience; or
  • Associates degree and four years of campaign, community organizing or union organizing experience; or HS diploma plus six years of campaign, community organizing or union organizing experience.

Transgender Rights Field Organizer

Location:  Albany or New York, NY

Summary:  The Empire State Pride Agenda is New York’s statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights and advocacy organization. Our mission is to win equality and justice for LGBT New Yorkers and our families.  Through our education, organizing and advocacy programs, we work toward creating a broadly diverse alliance of LGBT people and our allies in government, communities of faith, labor, all sectors of the workforce and other social justice movements to achieve equality for LGBT New Yorkers and the broader goals of social, racial and economic justice. 

This position is a critical component of the Pride Agenda’s campaign to pass the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) in the state legislature.  The Field Organizer’s primary responsibility is to build the Pride Agenda’s field outreach program in support of our statewide campaign against discrimination based on gender identity and expression (GIE).  This includes directly identifying, training and mobilizing transgender and ally supporters in NYC and the Hudson Valley and supporting the GIE work of the other Field Organizers throughout the state.  The Transgender Rights Field Organizer reports to the Field Director.  

[Note:  This position is not responsible for all transgender issue work at the Pride Agenda.]

The GIE Field Organizer will:

  • Work with the Pride Agenda’s Field Director to identify NYC and Hudson Valley outreach opportunities and locally appropriate actions for the GENDA campaign
  • Work with the Field Organizer and Public Policy & Education Director to develop a GENDA Advocate Training curriculum for potential volunteer activists.  Conduct GENDA Advocate Trainings in NYC, Hudson Valley and Syracuse.  Assist with Trainings conducted by other Field Organizers in Long Island, Rochester, Buffalo, Albany and Queens
  • Continue to build a diverse GENDA Coalition; staff meetings of the GENDA Coalition; maintain listserv
  • Recruit and coordinate turn-out for LGBT Equality & Justice Day to ensure strong participation by NYC and Hudson Valley GENDA supporters.  Recruit constituents for legislative visits with elected officials both in-district and at Equality & Justice Day
  • Work with Field Team on LGBT Pride events, including organizing volunteers, tabling and logistics.  Research and attend important community events that will increase the visibility of gender identity and expression issues and LGBT equality and justice
  • Work with GENDA Advocates and other Field Organizers in support of local meetings to coordinate local activities with the statewide campaign, including house parties, vigils, rallies and community canvasses

Qualifications:

  • Experience in or familiarity with transgender/gender identity/gender expression issue organizing
  • Excellent writing skills; strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work with people
  • Commitment to the mission of the Pride Agenda and to serving LGBT communities through community-based and anti-racist organizing
  • Ability to work flexible hours that includes nights and weekends and travel throughout New York State
  • A strategic thinker who is detail-oriented, well-organized and self-directed
  • High degree of computer literacy.  Should have real-world knowledge of social networking sites and be interested in developing and implementing strategies to harness the power of the internet to engage and activate people to take action around our issues
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred, but not required

Field Organizer – Long Island

Location:  Long Island

The Field Organizer for Long Island is responsible for leading our field campaign for LGBT equality and justice on Long Island.  The Field Organizer reports to the Field Director and will work as part of a team of Pride Agenda field staff members throughout the state.

Network Coordinator

Location:  Albany, NY

Summary: The Empire State Pride Agenda is New York’s statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights and advocacy organization. Our mission is to win equality and justice for LGBT New Yorkers and our families.  As part of our work, the Pride Agenda coordinates the New York State LGBT Health and Human Services Network (“the Network”), a coalition of over 50 non-profit, community-based organizations providing non-HIV LGBT health and human services across the state.  

Based in Albany, the Network Coordinator will report to the Director of Public Policy & Education and work as part of a team of Pride Agenda staff members to support and coordinate the Network.  The Coordinator will be primarily responsible for the maintenance and strengthening of the Network’s internal infrastructure. 

 Duties include:  

  • Scheduling, attending, facilitating and following up on the Network’s committee, workgroup and regular monthly meetings, including drafting and distributing agendas and meeting reminders, and taking and distributing meeting minutes

  • Organizing the logistics of and facilitating the creation of materials for Network events such as conferences and the annual Network retreat, including meeting space, accommodations, meals, travel, facilitator and supplies

  • Maintaining mechanisms for Network communication, including the Network listserv, the database of contact information for all Network member organizations and working with Communications staff on keeping Network’s website presence up-to-date

  • Gathering data from Network member organizations to go into the Network annual report and helping to write, edit and distribute the report to Network members and community allies

  • Conducting site visits to Network member organizations across New York State

  • Processing applications for membership in the Network and reaching out to prospective organizational members

  • Coordinating the Network Technical Assistance Program by administering mini-grants to Network member organizations

  • Collecting dues from Network member organizations

  • Acting as a Network liaison on LGBT cultural competency technical assistance with state agencies

  • Appointing and supervising interns and volunteer work as it relates to the Network

  • Participating in general organizing and advocacy activities of the Empire State Pride Agenda, such as tabling and speaking

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to achieving equality and justice for LGBT New Yorkers and our families

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Excellent written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills

  • Detail oriented and well-organized

  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks

  • Computer proficient, including strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel and familiarity with Raiser’s Edge

  • Experience working for coalitions/associations a plus, particularly in membership services and meetings planning

  • Familiarity with New York State’s budgeting process a plus
